British Sugar - An AB Sugar Company
Apprenticeship scheme - apprentice in full hi-vis carries out a task image
If you’d rather earn while you learn, with a mixture of on-the-job training and college study, leading to a valuable qualification or two at the end of it all, this could be right up your street. We recruit annually across all four of our sites, Bury, Cantley, Newark and Wissington – Come and be a part of our team.

Combustion and Power Plant Apprenticeship

At the heart of our manufacturing plants are our own power stations generating steam for our processes and electricity for site use and for export to the local grids. We also use coal, oil and gas fired driers to evaporate water from pulp as part of our Animal Feed Production process. We have designed an apprenticeship scheme to develop the technicians to operate both our in house power stations and our combustion processes for Animal Feed Production.

Training at TTE

Our Combustion & Power Plant Apprenticeship scheme lasts four years in total. The first part will be up to 2 years residential training with our training partner TTE in Middlesbrough where you will live and learn with other British Sugar Apprentices in great accommodation and be provided with transportation to and from the college as well as accommodation and a generous living allowance.

The in-centre phase at the TTE will include a period of up to 2 years at TTE’s training facilities in Middlesbrough and the remaining 2 Years will be at one of the British Sugars sites in the UK. Whilst at TTE you will be studying for a BTEC Level 3 Diploma alongside practical skills as determined by British Sugar. TTE will ensure your welfare needs are supported during the residential stage at TTE, this includes access to a 24 hr call out facility. The onsite phase at British Sugar will include competency evaluation based on site specific competencies which will lead onto a final assessment and professional discussion to test and assess the knowledge you have gained throughout the delivery of the Apprenticeship programme.

The qualifications you’ll gain

Over the course of the 4 years you will spend the first year at a specialist college with apprentices from other sites and you will then join a factory team for 3 years for on the job training.

You will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Process Technology and a Level 3 Diploma in Operating Combustion and Power Plant. In addition you will also be completing some practical engineering skills training.

What happens afterwards

On successful completion of the scheme you will be appointed as a factory-based engineering, process or combustion technician.
We’ll work with you to help you build on your skills over the following years. If you have the ambition and talent, you can look forward to our continued support and encouragement for further progression in our Technician Grading Scheme

What you’ll need

To begin with, you will need to be 16 or over for the engineering scheme and 17 or over (by September 2014) for the process and combustion scheme and have at least 5 GCSEs or equivalent (C grade or higher) including Maths, English and Science. We also look for flexibility, team spirit, imagination, determination and high levels of self-motivation.

Your progress will be overseen by a management sponsor, and you chat informally to your mentor any time you need to. With their support and the benefit of business-specific courses, you will build an excellent all-round knowledge and experience of our whole operation. As other apprentices have found, we’ll be behind you every step of the way.
