Core Skilled Engineering Apprenticeship
Our Core Skilled Engineering Apprenticeship programme lasts four years in total. The first part will be up to 2 years residential training with our training partner TTE in Middlesbrough where you will live and learn with other British Sugar Apprentices in great accommodation and be provided with transportation to and from the college as well as accommodation and a generous living allowance.
TTE in Middlesbrough Provides Technical Training to the oil and gas, process, manufacturing and engineering sectors.
We’ve been working with TTE for years because they focus on giving people the skills to meet our business needs. TTE specialises in apprenticeship programmes and has helped our apprentices reach their full potential – and have fun doing it.
TTE has an excellent reputation for its industry specific learning environment. Its industrial scale process plants provide realistic industrial work environments that cannot be replicated at a local college.
The in-centre phase at the TTE will include a period of up to 2 years at TTE’s training facilities in Middlesbrough and the remaining 2 Years will be at one of the British Sugars sites in the UK. Whilst at TTE you will be studying for a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering alongside practical skills as determined by British Sugar. TTE will ensure your welfare needs are supported during the residential stage at TTE, this includes access to a 24 hr call out facility. The onsite phase at British Sugar will include competency evaluation based on site specific competencies which will lead onto a final assessment and professional discussion to test and assess the knowledge you have gained throughout the delivery of the Apprenticeship programme.
Your progress will be overseen by a management sponsor, and you can chat informally to your mentor any time you need to. With their support and the benefit of business-specific courses, you will build an excellent all-round knowledge and experience of our whole operation. As other apprentices have found, we’ll support you every step of the way.
Alongside the fantastic technical training we offer, you will also have the opportunity every year to spend a week with The Outward Bound Trust to support your personal development by giving your real scenarios that encourage self-awareness, communication skills, self-management and team work to name a few.

What you’ll need
On successful completion of the scheme you will be appointed as a factory-based technician.
We’ll work with you to help you build on your skills over the following years. If you have the ambition and talent, you can look forward to our continued support and encouragement for further progression and continued support and mentorship from an experienced engineer within the business.
To apply, you will need to be 18 (by 31st August 2016) or over and have at least 5 GCSEs or equivalent (C grade or higher) including Maths, English and Science.
We also look for flexibility, team spirit, imagination, determination and high levels of self-motivation.
Other things we ask for are:
- Willingness to stay and travel away from home on a regular basis (Hotel and food subsistence paid for).
- Punctual and well organised.
- Enthusiastic with a desire to listen, learn, ask questions.
- Willing to take on board constructive feedback and learn from this.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well as part of a team, showing respect for others.
- Driving license preferred, must be willing to learn to drive and pass driving test within first year of apprenticeship.
