Location: Placement opportunities based in Operations Services Science at Wissington Sugar Factory (near Downham Market) but including travel to other factory sites throughout East Anglia and the East Midlands.

Year in Industry - 12 month Science (Chemistry) Placement
You will be a Chemistry undergraduate, or an undergraduate from a closely related discipline, and you will join our Operations Services Science team; this team provides scientific and technical support to British Sugar and its associated companies. This support can range from assisting factory operations, to providing analytical support to the commercial department or involvement with the optimisation of animal feed production.
The placement trainee, under the mentorship of senior scientists, will be exposed to a stimulating and varied environment that will provide opportunity to develop the skills for a successful scientific career in industry.
The role will include a variety of work, including:
- The involvement with a variety of project work from an early stage; this varies, but previous projects have included:
- Factory process troubleshooting
- Environmental monitoring
- Evaluation and optimisation of new processes/lab equipment
- Providing a range of specialist analysis for customers, including analytical techniques including AAS, LDPS, HPIC and HPLC
- Reporting of analysis and providing technical assistance
- Method development and validation
- Working with, and improvement in, Quality Systems

The placement is likely to involve some travelling on company business and may involve periods at other UK sites. The company will provide suitable accommodation and transport. It is essential for the applicant to have a full driving licence
. Due to the rural location of the site, which has no public transport links, some form of private transport will be necessary.
